Two drafts for four cents a word.

It’s really that simple. If you’re a self-publishing author or publisher, the base fee for Empathic Editing is $.04 per word, plus 8.5% sales tax. If you’re new to the service, you’ll receive a one-hour edit of a sample of your work at no charge. If everything works out, the adventure begins!

Other services:

Submissions: $350 for two-hour phone conference, drafting of a query letter or non-fiction book proposal, book genre identification, and advice on who to submit to and how to find them.

Jacket Copy: $40/hr for development and editing of jacket copy including author bio.

Authenticity/Sensitivity Reads: $300 per book up to 80,000 words, or $40/hr for reading of sections/chapters. Reads will include marginalia and summative notes.

Author Coaching: In rare circumstances, I can help new authors write their own first draft through lessons, teleconferences, and a “packet exchange” in which they will receive notes and directions forward as they write. MFA students may recognize this method as the “low-residency” model, and it is very effective. Essentially, this is a writing class. Fees are negotiable and are billed per packet/conference or “per semester.”

Ghostwriting: In very rare circumstances, I can write the first draft of an author’s book for them via voice recording or dictation, or through the compilation of notes or recorded lectures. Fees are per-project and are negotiable.
